Garmin 010-12525-00 Powered Mount, Black
- Got this mounted to my motorcycle via A ram mount. This really locks the Garmin 66i down good and tight. The only thing I don’t like is the rubber cover for the power prongs at the bottom. It doesn’t like to stay on and covered. Any vibration and the rubber cover will pop off and this is on my KLR 650 so there’s plenty of vibration. But definitely durable and definitely locks onto the unit tightly and can take big bumps without coming loose at all. So yes I recommend this
- I\'m using this mount for my inReach while riding my dualsport offroad. It has a couple major shortcomings. The first is that it isn\'t water resistant. You\'re not supposed to let the contacts get wet. That\'s a significant problem for something that lives clamped to handlebars with no weather protection. One wonders what the point of having exposed charge contacts on an outdoor device is if they cannot be used to charge the device in inclement weather using factory designed charge cradle for the device. The second is that, even when kept bone dry, the contacts don\'t make solid/consistent contact and charge the device continuously. If you\'re using it in a vehicle where there\'s any vibration at all, the inReach will constantly lose and make connection with the contacts. By any vibration at all, I do not mean vibration while blasting down a nasty, rocky trail, I mean the minimal vibration experienced idling from my driveway to the end of my well-maintained residential street will cause constant disconnection. If you have the device configured to automatically turn itself off and on, it\'ll display the power lost auto-off screen every few seconds for a second or two, then make connection again and go back to the main menu. It mostly manages to keep the device charged since it can charge a lot faster than the inReach burns power at low frequency tracking, but you pretty much need to disable the auto-off feature for the device to be at all useful while on the mount. I\'m pretty dissatisfied with the mount and I think I might be better off with one of the clip style mounts and a nicely fitting micro-usb cable.
- Some LIMITATIONS to consider before purchasing this mount for the InReach Explorer. I assume that these would apply to the SE+ model as well. I have returned the mount due to these limitations.1. The InReach unit will not fit into the mount with the carabiner clip attached. While disappointing, this is not a deal breaker. The mount utilizes the same \"clip-in\" function that the included carabiner uses, so it must be removed or the unit won\'t fit into the mount. I personally think this is a design oversight - the InReach is a portable device, would be nice to remove it from the mount and go. Now you have to remove it, add the carabiner (if so desired), then go.2. The USB power cord is permanently attached to the bottom of the mount. This is not a deal breaker, but it would be a more modular design if there was a USB port on the bottom of the mount, so the cord could be removed when power is not required, or a different cable could be used (to change length). I don\'t really need the charging capabilities of the mount, since the InReach already has a USB charging port built in as well (redundant).3. The instructions that come with the mount (yes, I ACTUALLY read them!) mention that the charging contacts should be dry and should not have any moisture or be wet when the GPS unit is in place, or damage to the unit may occur. I am using the unit for off-road motorcycling, so there is always a chance of the contacts getting wet/dirty in some fashion. To protect the charging contacts, Garmin has supplied a little rubber cap that will fit over the contact points on the mount. Once in place, the InReach WILL NOT FIT INTO THE MOUNT - YOU CANNOT USE THE MOUNT WHEN THE RUBBER CAP IS IN PLACE TO PROTECT THE CHARGING POINTS.Point 3 is the deal breaker, unfortunately. You have a mount for a device that likely will see inclement conditions and remote areas, but you can\'t use the mount during those conditions (under power; probably could use it without the USB cable plugged in).I will say that the InReach unit fit the mount perfectly (without the carabiner, and with the protective rubber cap removed) and seemed to be held quite securely in place. If you need something to hold the InReach and it will stay cozy and dry, this mount might meet your needs, as it is otherwise a very nice mount.
- This is just what I needed. I use my vehicle to get to remote locations. I clip the unit in and it keeps the inreach charged, and tracks my location. When I arrive at my destination I pull the inreach out and attach the carabiner clip. This is not a problem since it only takes about 2 seconds. I then hike and camp away from the vehicle. When I return I just put it back in the mount. When I am stopping hiking and coming back and going again I do not bother removing the clip to remount the unit, the inreach has a great battery life, you do not have to be removing the clip and reinstalling all the time. I like that the USB cable is permanently affixed to the mount. Anyone that has gone off into unimproved roads or off road completely, knows that everything will shake loose. I am also very happy that it does not come with the ball attached to the back, this allows you to install the unit in a fashion that suits your individual situation.
- This is a great mount, well fitting and solid! I took a star off for the fixed USB cable. I would like the option to replace it with one of my choosing. I mounted the unit in my Oliver travel trailer in back near the beds, within easy reach, and the signals go out through the fiberglass roof as if it were not there. I used a USB charger and mounted that unit behind the cabinet. The Powered Mount looks great there, I can see it from almost everywhere, and it will always be at hand and fully charged. Highly recommended! JD, Spokane, WA
- Works Awsome, I built a custom mount to bolt directly to the dash of my motorcycle. Have put multiple hard off-road miles on bike since installing and hand held unit stays firmly attached, no movement or vibration. Have washed bike and drove in the rain with no water leaks.
